Skates for recreational riding

Recreational roller skates are the best choice if you just want to get out on the path, in the park or on the estate and ride for pleasure - no racing, no pressure, but plenty of exercise. In the recreational skates category, you will find models for young and old that combine a comfortable boot, an aluminium ski, ABEC 7 or ABEC 9 bearings and soft PU wheels to dampen vibrations.

These are skates made for longer, comfortable rides - by the lake, on the boulevard or between blocks. The range includes both adjustable models (which grow with your foot) and typically "adult" sizes, ideal if you are returning to rollerblading after years and are looking for equipment that will allow you to remember riding without stress.

Facts at a glance (for a quick selection)

Skates for leisure skating - simply an enjoyable ride

Recreational inline skates are primarily intended to be comfortable and predictable. The boot is well cushioned and ventilated, the aluminium skid guides the wheels stably and the soft polyurethane dampens uneven surfaces. This is the perfect set when your goal is:

  • getting fit after work or school,
  • a light cardio workout in the fresh air,
  • to take a ride with your children or friends,
  • returning to rollerblading after a break of several years.

Designs such as the NA13810 TWIST skates offer adjustment in several sizes (S/M/L) and matching wheel diameter - smaller for younger, larger for older users - so one model can last for several seasons.

How to choose inline skates for recreational skating?

Advanced level

  • Beginner / returning after years
Look for a soft, comfortable shoe, standard ABEC 7 bearings and wheels with a diameter of around 72-80 mm. The NA14124 BLACK skates from NILS EXTREME are a good example - stable, predictable, with a rear brake and a semi-soft, ventilated shoe.
  • Intermediate
If you're already confident on rollerblades, you can go for models with ABEC 9 bearings and larger wheels in the upper sizes - such as the NA18137A ROCKO ROLLERS or the NA22151 ARMOUR BLACK& GOLD ROLLERS.

Size and fit

Recreational rollerblades should:

  • hold the heel and ankle firmly,
  • not compress the toes,
  • have no lateral play.

If you are buying for a child or teenager, go for an adjustable model - such as the NA13810 TWIST skates, which come in a range of sizes (31-34, 35-38, 39-42) and grow with the foot.

Skid and wheels

An aluminium skid is standard on Nils Extreme leisure skates - stiffer and lighter than a plastic skid, giving better control of the ride and more precise energy transfer from the rebound.

Wheels:

  • material: PU (polyurethane) - better grip and vibration dampening,
  • diameter: usually 64-80 mm (depending on size),
  • hardness: "recreational", i.e. a compromise between comfort and durability.

Shoe and fastening system

A comfortable boot is the key to making you want to ride more than once a year. Inside you'll find high-density foam, mesh/velvet materials and often a breathable membrane. On the outside, a semi-soft or harder shell, depending on the model.

The fastening on most models looks the same:

  • top buckle with locking mechanism,
  • Velcro strap in the midfoot,
  • classic laces on the instep.

This combination stabilises the ankle well and minimises the risk of the foot "floating" in the shoe.

FAQ

  1. Are recreational inline skates suitable for beginners?
Yes. This is the category designed for people who are just starting out or are returning to roller skates after a break. The boot is comfortable, the skid is stable and the performance of the wheels and bearings allow for a smooth but controlled ride. Models such as the NA14124 or NA13810 will be great for a starter.
  2. Can you go faster on recreational roller skates?
You can - recreational rollerblades can easily accelerate to speeds fully sufficient for a cardio workout. It's just that their design focuses on comfort and stability rather than maximum performance. When you feel that speed is your main goal, you can always look in the Speed Skates category.
  3. Adjustable or non-adjustable rollerblades - which to choose?
For children and teenagers, adjustable models such as the NA13810 TWIST are very practical - one pair is enough for several foot sizes. For adults, non-adjustable models, such as NA14124 or NA1169A, are usually more comfortable and "cleaner" in design.
  4. What surfaces are best for recreational riding?
The best surfaces are smooth asphalt or evenly laid paving stones - on cycle paths, park alleys, boulevards. The PU wheels on leisure skates can also cope with minor unevenness, but potholes on pavements or very rough surfaces will be less comfortable and wear out the wheels more quickly.
  5. What accessories are worth buying for leisure skates?
The bare minimum is a helmet and protectors (wrists, knees, elbows). Many people also opt for special skate socks (higher, without thick seams) and a bag or backpack for their equipment. Everything you need can be found in the Skating Accessories section.
